Insubria: la regione dei laghi prealpini

La voce Insubria non trova un facile riscontro enciclopedico perché il significato geografico e culturale di questo termine è stato rivalutato solo negli ultimi anni. Per ricostruirlo è necessario risalire all'etimologia della parola, che ha evidenti legami sia con il sostantivo 'Insubri' che con l'aggettivo 'insubre'.

Il dizionario Devoto-Oli ricorda che il termine 'insubre' è stato utilizzato da Ugo Foscolo come sinonimo di 'lombardo'. Questa definizione non è tuttavia sufficiente se si considera che gli 'Insubri' furono una popolazione celtica della Gallia Transalpina, stabilitasi nell'Italia settentrionale nel V secolo a.C. e sottomessa a Roma a partire dal 194 a.C. come ricordato dal medesimo dizionario.

Per dare una forma geografica al territorio insubre bisogna dunque ricordare che, secondo fonti autorevoli, il principale centro abitato della regione fu Mediolanum (l’attuale Milano), ma anche Como, Pavia, Novara, Lodi e Bergamo avrebbero fatto parte di questo territorio. Oggi, studi più recenti che restringono il campo di indagine, tendono ad identificare l’Insubria con la “regione dei laghi” a nord di Milano, comprendente certamente i bacini del Lario (Lago di Como), del Ceresio (Lago di Lugano) e del Verbano (Lago Maggiore).

Molto più difficile è invece identificare l’area secondo i canoni politici odierni, poiché la suddetta “regione dei laghi” comprenderebbe non solo le due province piemontesi di Novara e Verbania, e quelle lombarde di Varese e Como, ma anche il Canton Ticino, cioè la Svizzera italiana fino al massiccio del San Gottardo. Sul piano politico sono oggi molto attive le relazioni tra Como, Varese ed il Canton Ticino, al fine di rivalutare l’antica regione anche dal punto di vista culturale. Primo risultato di questa precisa volontà politica è stato l’istituzione, alla fine degli anni Novanta del secolo scorso, dell’Università dell’Insubria, un ateneo statale con sedi principali a Varese e Como.

It is not easy to find something into books about the word "Insubria" because its geographical and cultural meaning has been valued only in the last few years. Before we move on and in order to fix ideas, let's have a look at the etymology of the word and at its relationship with the noun ‘Insubri’ and the adjective ‘insubre’. The dictionary of Italian language “Devoto-Oli” tell us that the word ‘insubre’ has been used by the Italian writer Ugo Foscolo as synonymous of ‘lombardo’, in the meaning of “citizen of Lombardia”, which is an important region of northern Italy.

Nevertheless this definition is not proper if we consider that ‘Insubri’ were a Celtic population from “Gallia” established in northern Italy since the fifth century BC and subjected to Rome since 194 BC, as can also be found in the same dictionary.

Good sources report that the main town of this area was Mediolanum (the ancient name of Milan), but also Como, Pavia, Novara, Lodi and Bergamo were minor towns there. More recent studies are oriented to identify Insubria as the land of big lakes located in northern of Milan area: Lake of Como (the ancient name was “Lario”), Lake of Lugano (“Ceresio”) and Lake Maggiore (“Verbano”) are the three most representative.

Much more difficult it is to identify this land according to politics, because the above mentioned “region of big lakes” should involve the district of Novara, Verbania, Varese and Como plus, in addition, a part of Switzerland. Canton Ticino is in fact a land of Swiss confederation located along the river “Ticino” till Alps: geography tell us this is a part of Insubria too.
Today, political relationship among Como, Varese and Canton Ticino are strong in order to revalue the ancient region also from the cultural point of view. A first result of this specific political will was the institution of the University of Insubria, at the end of the past century, a public university located in Varese and Como.
